Water. It’s what keeps us alive, but only 1% of all the Earth’s water can be used as drinking water. So shouldn’t we be more concerned about keeping this small amount of water the most healthy and clean it can be? Yes, we should be—but in reality, we are exposed to all types of regulated and unregulated chemicals in our drinking water every single day. Thousands and thousands of chemicals are made and proposed to the EPA every year to be tested and decided whether or not they would be harmful to humans and to publish their effects. This paper will outline regulation on the wide variety of chemicals and also how these regulations have actually made changes. Over the years, the U.S. has acquired many laws and regulations regarding water†¦show more content†¦The EPA also uses the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule to collect data for contaminants that are suspected to be present in drinking water and do not have health-based standards set under the SDWA. This provides EPA and others with scientifically valid data on the occurrence of these contaminants in drinking water, allowing the public to know the effects and health risks of these unknown chemicals. But, the EPA is also restricted to how many chemicals it can monitor and regulate for a given time. The SDWA amendments of 1996 provide for monitoring of no more than 30 contaminants per 5-year cycle and also monitoring only a representative sample of public water systems serving less than or equal to 10,000 people. The EPA is also required to publish a list of contaminants every 5 years under the SDWA, and directs the Agency to consider the health effects on humans and occu rrence information for unregulated contaminants. The Agency makes decisions to place contaminants on the list that present the greatest public health concern related to exposure from drinking water. It uses this list to make regulatory decisions regarding contaminants. Every day we are exposed to contaminants in drinking water and are most likely not even aware of the harmful effects to human health and to the ecological systems as well. Americans For Fair Taxation is a private, non-profit research and advocacy group that assembled a group of American economists to work on a federal tax code that would be â€Å"simpler,† â€Å"fairer,† and â€Å"more progressive† than before. The objective of the team was to design a new tax system that would be â€Å"revenue-neutral† and capable of truly unleashing the potential of the economy.   The new tax system was also meant to help in the â€Å"â€Å"new wealth creation for every working American. The Fair Tax has been proposed as a replacement for the above mentioned taxes as of January 1, 2009.   The new tax is actually explained as a â€Å"national retail sales tax on all goods and services sold at retail.† The fact that it is still a tax for the government to generate revenues through, the new tax is meant to be â€Å"revenue-neutral,† which suggests that the new tax would have to be set at a level that is necessary to generate government revenues the present sources of which would have to be replaced through it (â€Å"The Fair Tax†). The new tax would act as a 23 percent sales tax on all goods and services bought through retailers for personal consumption.   The exports of the United States will not be taxed on the principles of the Fair Tax. Similarly, business purchases of inputs are not to be taxed under the newly proposed taxation policy.   Other items exempted include used or old goods, investments, savings, plus education expenses including tuition fees (â€Å"The Fair Tax†).
