Water. It’s what keeps us alive, but only 1% of all the Earth’s water can be used as drinking water. So shouldn’t we be more concerned about keeping this small amount of water the most healthy and clean it can be? Yes, we should be—but in reality, we are exposed to all types of regulated and unregulated chemicals in our drinking water every single day. Thousands and thousands of chemicals are made and proposed to the EPA every year to be tested and decided whether or not they would be harmful to humans and to publish their effects. This paper will outline regulation on the wide variety of chemicals and also how these regulations have actually made changes. But, the EPA is also restricted to how many chemicals it can monitor and regulate for a given time. The SDWA amendments of 1996 provide for monitoring of no more than 30 contaminants per 5-year cycle and also monitoring only a representative sample of public water systems serving less than or equal to 10,000 people. The EPA is also required to publish a list of contaminants every 5 years under the SDWA, and directs the Agency to consider the health effects on humans and occu rrence information for unregulated contaminants. The Agency makes decisions to place contaminants on the list that present the greatest public health concern related to exposure from drinking water. It uses this list to make regulatory decisions regarding contaminants.
